GAANN The aim of the GAANN program in the Materials Science and Engineering Program, School of Engineering, University of Connecticut is to provide fellowships to graduate students of superior ability who also demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree available in their discipline (Ph.D). Specifically, we will focus on increasing the number of highly trained graduate students, particularly those from traditionally underrepresented minorities and women. The Materials Science and Engineering GAANN award will support doctoral students in the field of “biomaterials for tissue regeneration”. The multi-disciplinary nature of biomaterials study requires the close collaboration of disciplines spanning materials and molecular cell biology as well as zoology, chemistry, polymer science, structural engineering, information technology and clinical studies. This GAANN program is administered by a multi-disciplinary team of faculty from both the UConn Storrs and Farmington (UConn Heath Center) campuses. The close collaboration between the scientists in both campuses and the close association with clinical and basic biological scientists are the unique features of this program. All GAANN fellows will also take part in formal and informal instruction on the art of research and teaching, comprising direct laboratory experience in a few laboratories at both Storrs and Farmington sites, special seminars, courses and interactive learning to prepare the students to pursue careers in academic or scientific disciplines. Short internships in appropriate industrial facilities will also be arranged. Qualifications:
