New Director of the Connecticut Global Fuel Cell Center and MSE Faculty Appointed
Dr. Prabhakar Singh, the new Director of the Connecticut Global Fuel Cell Center, has also been appointed as a full professor in the Materials Science & Engineering Program. Dr. Singh is a Fellow of ASM International, the American Ceramic Society and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, and he serves as Chairman of the ASM Energy Committee. He is a world leader on fuel cell research and strengthens our department in the area of energy research. Dr. Singh will be presenting a course on new topics in energy next year. MSE Doctoral Student is a 2008 MRS Graduate Student Award Finalist
Chunguang Tang, a doctoral student in the Materials Science & Engineering Program, has been chosen as a 2008 MRS Graduate Student Award Finalist. He will be making his presentation on Dec. 2, 2008 at the MRS Fall meeting in Boston. Chunguang Tang's research focuses on high dielectric constant materials for next-generation electronic devices. Specifically he uses first principles computations and first principles-derived force fields to study point defects in HfO2 and their effects on Si:HfO2 interface structures.

AIChE Recognizes Chemical Engineering Professor as a "Chemical Engineer of the Modern Era"
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) has recognized Dr. Cato Laurencin, Chemical Engineering Professor, as one of the few “Modern Era” chemical engineers. The AIChE’s Centennial Celebration Committee chose 100 chemical engineers for acknowledgement as “Chemical Engineers of the Modern Era” in achievement, leadership and new frontiers. Dr. Laurencin was noted for new frontiers in novel polymer-synthesized ceramic-composite-based system for bone repair and in vitro evaluation. Chemical Engineering Professor Named UTC Professor
Associate Professor, Lei Zhu has been named one out of five, new UTC Professors. Professor Zhu's research interests focus on: Supramolecular Self-assembly of Columnar Liquid Crystals; Organic/Inorganic Nanocomposites for Capacitors; Biodegradable Polymers and Block Copolymers for Diagnostic and Drug Delivery; and Polymer Ordering on Nanometer Scales. Assistant professor of Chemical, Materials & Biomolecular Engineering Benjamin Wilhite has received a National Science Foundation Early Career Development (CAREER) Award that will support his research aimed at improving the harvesting of hydrogen from green hydrocarbons (biofuels). more

In our constant efforts to improve academically and professionally, the Chemical, Materials & Biomolecular Engineering Department is pleased to announce the addition of five faculty members; Dr. Cato Laurencin, Dr. George A. Rossetti, Jr., Dr. Brian G. Willis, Dr. William Mustain and Dr. Jeffrey McCutcheon. Cato, George, Brian, Bill and Jeff all will be joining our Program in August 2008.
