Laboratory Technician III (UCP V)
Chemical, Materials & Biomolecular Engineering Department

The CMBE Dept. is seeking a candidate to maintain and assist in the running of the Department’s undergraduate teaching labs. Duties include but are not limited to: monitoring the teaching laboratories, independently resolving problems before or as they arise and making changes as necessary to achieve the intended results (this includes researching, preparing and testing difficult laboratory experiments to ensure they will demonstrate the intended scientific principle or procedure for which they were designed); maintain, monitor and ensure proper safety conditions; maintenance of equipment, including performing minor repairs; providing instruction to students and staff on how to properly operate the equipment, clean-up and disassembly of equipment, ensuring that the laboratories remain in the best condition possible; interacting with faculty, teaching assistants, graduate and undergraduate students in the operation of the labs, this may include supervising and training lab aides and student employees; assist in preparing budgets for the undergraduate courses and maintain an up-to-date inventory of supplies needed to carry out the laboratory exercises using a database; generating order requests for supplies and equipment for the undergraduate teaching laboratories; closely monitoring all related purchasing and shipping problems and assisting in special projects as needed by the Department, such as special workshops and exhibits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering or in a closely related engineering subject and 3 or more years of experience; or equivalent education and experience.
  2. Thorough knowledge of concepts, practices and standard laboratory procedures, including safety procedures, in the technical specialty.
  3. Ability to explain laboratory procedures and maintain laboratory equipment.
  4. Ability to supervise and train others. Good organizational and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Prior experience in a laboratory technician position.
  2. Ability to repair laboratory equipment.
  3. Familiarity with equipment located in Chemical Eng. and/or Materials Science & Eng. teaching labs.

This is full-time, end date position subject to annual renewal.
