MSE Professor, Harold Brody, is the 2009 Recipient of The Minerals,Metals & Materials Society’s Bruce Chalmers Award (cont.)

Harold D. Brody, Materials Science & Engineering Distinguished Professor, will receive theBruce Chalmers Award next week in San Francisco at The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society’s (TMS) Annual Meeting. This honor comes as recognition for Professor Brody’s seminal contributions to microsegregation and back diffusion during dendritic solidification, in-situ composites and peritectic solidification, and computer modeling of solidification processing.
The Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division of TMS created the Bruce Chalmers Award to honor those making outstanding contributions in the field of solidification science in 1989. There are two major criteria for nominations of this award, including; (1) Must have an established record of research and publications in the field of solidification processing; (2) recognizes the quality and relevance of work that has had or is likely to have a significant and lasting impact on the development of the discipline (not intended to recognize lifetime contributions). “When I was a graduate student, the Harvard and MIT research groups of Professor Bruce Chalmers and of Professor Merton Flemings, one of the first Chalmers Award recipients, interacted and held combined seminars. These two pioneers of solidification research and leading materials science and engineering educators inspired and served as models for my professional career. To be nominated for this award by my former research students and to be selected by a panel of previous Bruce Chalmers Award recipients, many of whom participated in those combined seminars and research groups, it is extremely gratifying.” Professor Harold Brody
