CMBE Department Welcomes New Visiting Professor (cont.)

Dr. Pond obtained his B.Sc. in Applied Physics from the University of London, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics of Materials frobobpondm the University of Bristol. He was a faculty member in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Liverpool for 30 years, including 15 years as a chaired professor. He is currently a University Fellow in the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at the University of Exeter.

Dr. Pond is aworld-renowned authority on interfaces in crystalline materials; his work on the role of interfacial line defects in phase transformations has had a profound impact in the field. During his time at UConn he will be delivering a short course / workshop on this topic aimed at graduate students. This will consist of four sessions over the two weeks 10/13/08 to 10/24/08 (for details please contact Dr. Mark Aindow – m.aindow@uconn.edu). The intention is that students who attend the short course will then have the opportunity to spend time with Dr. Pond during the remainder of his stay if they wish to get his advice on the application of these methods to their own research.

Dr. Pond will also deliver a seminar entitled “Experimental Observations and Modelling of Parent-Martensite Interfaces” on November 5th.

Dr. Pond’s visit is made possible by the award of a University Guest Professor grant from the UConn Research Foundation.
